Nerve cell. Light micrograph of a nerve cell (neurone). At centre is the nerve cell body (purple). The paler circle in the centre of the cell is the nucleus with its nucleolus (black dot). The nucleus is surrounded by cytoplasm known as perikaryon (purple). Extending from each cell body are numerous processes (long lines). These consist of axons and dendrites. Each neurone has a single axon but may have numerous dendrites. The axon is responsible for carrying impulses (messages) away from the neurone body. The dendrites are the major sites for impulses going to the neurone body. Magnification x85 at 35mm size | |
