Synapse. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a synapse, the junction between two nerve cells. Synapses transmit an electrical signal from one nerve cell to the next. In this case, the pre- synaptic cell is blue, the post-synaptic cell is green. When an electrical signal reaches a synapse it triggers the release of chemicals called neuro- transmitters from tiny vesicles (blue-green circles, top) at the end of the cell. The vesicles burst through the membrane (exocytosis - yellow holes),and the neurotransmitters then cross a microscopic gap and bind to the receptor nerve cell, passing on the signal.
