Computer representation of the activation of a multipolar neurone of the cerebellum, known as a Purkinje cell. A Purkinje cell is composed of a flask-shaped cell body (blue at bottom) from which branch numerous dendrites (red) and a single long axon (blue at bottom). Stimuli from other neurone cells produce a flow of Calcium ions (yellow) from the dendrites towards the cell body. From here a message is sent through the long axon to other neurone cells deep into the cerebellum. The cerebellum forms the largest part of the hindbrain. It is essential for the maintenance of activity in groups of voluntary muscles | |
