Knee joint. Coloured digitised computer image of the human knee (genual) joint. This is the joint between bones of the upper and lower leg. The single large femur bone of the upper leg (at top) meets the two bones of the lower limb (the tibia at lower left, the smaller fibula at lower right). At the point of this articulation (at centre) are flat discs of protective cartilage called menisci. The patella of the kneecap is seen above centre as a circular bone overlying the femur. As a modified hinge joint, the knee is capable of bending, straightening, and gives slight rotation in the bent position | |
