MODEL RELEASED. Man undergoing stress or exercise testing on a treadmill. An electrocardiograph (ECG) records the electrical activity of his heart while a sphygmomanometer on his left arm measures his blood pressure. Various electrodes taped over his chest and back are connected to the ECG machine at left. This technique is used in the diagnosis of cardiac ischaemia, the restriction in the heart's blood supply which occurs in coronary artery disease, and also for detecting abnormal heart rhythms. Typical patients might be suffering from angina (pain in the chest on exercising) or being assessed in the weeks following a heart attack | |
