This is a lateral view of the skull obtained during balloon compression of the trigeminal nerve for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (tic dolereau). A large, long needle is placed through the cheek and guided to the skull base where the fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve) resides. The balloon is then inflated and it compresses the nerve which damages the nerve and hopefully relieves the patients facial pain | |
