Woman using a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device (TENS) on the area around the stiches resulting from a caesarean birth,to help control post-operative pain. Numerous high- voltage,high-frequency electrical impulses are passed between the pairs of elecrodes on her abdomen. The woman is able to adjust their frequency and intensity to suit her own requirements using the control unit. The technique has many applications in analgesia, being cheaper & safer than using drugs: it is not recommended for use on children or pregnant women. After initial evaluation in hospital, the person may be allowed to continue using the device at home | |
