Jarvik-7,a pneumatically operated aluminium & plastic artificial heart used in the first human implant on Dr Barney Clark,1st December 1982,at the University of Utah Medical Centre,Salt Lake City. The heart relies on external power for compressed air & electricity. The patient is thus leashed with a 6ft lifeline to support equipment. The heart was named after its designer Dr Robert Jarvik,who was one of the three doctors to perform the implantation. The others involved were Dr William DeVries (surgeon) & Dr Tom Kessler.
