MODEL RELEASED: A child suffering from cerebral palsy being wheeled along a pavement by a hospital care worker. Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder of the brain. Onset normally follows brain injury during infancy - many caused by mechanical injury during birth, maternal sickness or viral infections. The condition is seen as weakness, paralysis or lack of co-ordination. In many cases there may be related epilepsy or mental disability, although others may show no loss of intelligence whatsoever. Sufferers are correctly known as spastics, although the term is seldom heard due to its use as a misguided colloquial form of verbal abuse | |
