Mutant frog. African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) with three back legs. This frog is naturally found in warm, stagnant ponds and streams in Africa along the Rift Valley south of the Sahara Desert. However,it has been used extensively as a laboratory research animal, mostly in the field of vertebrate embryology,as it is easy to observe the development of the frog embryo. As a result it is now found in freshwater areas all over the world. The hind legs of the African clawed frog are large and webbed. The three inside toes on each hind leg have claws which are used to tear apart large pieces of food | |
