Rash on leg due to Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by spirochetes, and is transferred to humans by tick bites. The ticks concerned,Ixodes dammini and Amblyomma americanus, infest both the whitefooted mouse and the white-tailed deer in the USA. Lyme disease typically occurs in the summer and early autumn. Symptoms appear 3-20 days following the tick bite. The bite soon becomes surrounded by a large rash (erythema chronicum migrans) as seen here. Treatment is with tetracycline, followed by penicillin or erythromycin. Anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs may be used against the associated Lyme arthritis (incidence about 25% of cases) | |
