PET scan (Positron Emission Tomography) of the human heart, showing the effect of a blood clot or thrombosis on blood flow in one of the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle (myocardium) with blood. Thrombus formation usually occurs in regions of arteries that are partially blocked by formations of fatty atheroma plaques. A total blockage in one of the coronary arteries leads to the death (myocardial infarction) of the heart muscle supplied by that artery. Coronary heart disease is more common in men than women and is associated with high blood cholestrol levels, smoking, stress and lack of exercise | |
