Gangrene of toes due to diabetes. Especially common in elderly patients, the gangrene follows from infection of painless abrasions of the feet, normally on the sole. The infection can cause acute local vascular damage, initiating the gangrene, which in turn may become infected. This is known as 'wet' gangrene. Treatment of such an advanced state includes antibiotics, very precise glycaemic control and surgical improvement of blood supply. In very severe cases, amputation may be indicated | |
