| Diabetic pancreas. Light micrograph of a section through part of a diabetic patient's pancreas. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism resulting from inadequate production of the hormone insulin by the pancreas. Insulin is produced by secretory beta cells in the islets of Langerhans. At this magnification the islets (grey) appear normal. However the number of beta cells (not discernible) is likely to be reduced with those that are left undergoing degeneration. The surrounding tissue is made up of digestive enzyme-secreting exocrine cells (pink) in lobules divided by septa (white). Haematoxylin and eosin stained. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size | |
