Neuroblastoma cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cell from a neuroblastoma cancer. Neuroblastoma is a highly malignant cancer derived from the primitive neuroblast cells of the nervous system. It is commonly found in the medulla of the adrenal gland, but can originate anywhere in the nervous system. Cancer cells are typically large and they divide rapidly in a chaotic, uncontrolled manner. This cell has a rough surface with many finger-like cytoplasmic projections. Neuroblastoma is most commonly found in children. It often spreads (metastasizes) in the bloodstream, infecting the bones and liver. Magnification unknown | |
