| Cancer in ascites fluid. Light micrograph of ascites cells taken from the abdominal cavity showing adenocarcinoma cancer cells. The large cancerous cells (purple) are in clusters amongst the cells comprising the ascites fluid (brown). Ascites involves excess fluid collecting in the peritoneal cavity between the internal organs and the abdominal wall. In this case the fluid is due to cancer spreading from a lung,breast or intestinal tumour and causing a secondary growth of cancer (metastases) on the abdominal wall.
