MODEL RELEASED. Doctor consulting with an HIV- positive patient in relation to a study of the effects of AZT,the first anti-viral drug that was found to have any effect in prolonging the lives of AIDS victims. AZT (zidovudine),works by interfering in the process by which the virus hijacks the nuclear material of its target, the T4 lymphocytes, during replication. AZT inhibits HIV but does not eradicate it from the body; it is not, therefore,a cure but may slow down the progression of the disease. It is given to asymptomatic HIV-positive individuals to delay the onset of active AIDS. Its bone marrow toxicity necessitates regular blood tests | |
