Adenovirus Type 1. Coloured Transmission Electron micrograph (TEM) showing a cluster of adenovirus particles Type 1. There are dozens of serotypes of this virus. It causes symptoms of the common cold, that is infections of the upper respiratory tract and eyes. The adenovirus contains a DNA core surrounded by a coat or capsid (here coloured red) made up of 252 capsomer subunits. These subunits are arranged into a complex icosahedron or 20- faced figure. Adenovirus infections are common, particularly in children. The adenovirus is also believed to be associated with the transformation of some types of ordinary cells into cancerous cells.
