Hantaviruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through two Hanta- viruses (Hantaan virus). This virus,of the Bunya- virus group, causes Korean haemorrhagic fever. Two rounded viruses (blue) are sectioned, the virus at right appearing smaller. Humans obtain the virus by inhaling or ingesting secretions or excreta from infected rodents. The virus incubates for about two weeks. Severe symptoms follow: fever, kidney pain, nausea, haemorrhage and shock. The virus causes blood to leak from blood vessels into the tissues. Renal failure and jaundice may occur. Treatment by renal dialysis may substantially reduce the death rate. Magnification: unknown | |
