A girl holds a one year old bullfrog tadpole (Rana catesbeiana). The tadpoles of this species take two years to fully mature into a frog. This individual has already wintered once and is in the process of becoming a bullfrog. With a length of over four inches this is one of the largest tadpoles found in North America. It is an aggressive feeder which will resort to cannibalism if food is not abundant. Common to freshwater ponds throughout North America, these tadpoles are eaten by many predators including fish, birds, rodents, and small mammals | |
