Edwin Powell Hubble (1889-1953),American astronomer. In 1923,he calculated a distance of 900,000 light years for the Andromeda galaxy, proving for the first time that the spiral nebulae lay well beyond our own galaxy. In 1929,he measured the velocities with which 18 galaxies were moving away from Earth. He discovered that these velocities increased in proportion to their distance; this relationship is now known as Hubble's law. This work gave the first direct evidence of an expanding universe | |
