Robert D. Ballard,American oceanographer, marine geologist and underwater explorer. Ballard has participated in over 100 underwater expeditions, some using deep-diving submersibles. In 1973 and 1974 he explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge underwater mountain range. In 1977 his team discovered giant worms living around underwater hot springs. Using and developing optical fibre technology to obtain underwater pictures, his most famous discovery was locating the wreck of R.M.S. Titanic in 1985. The response from schoolchildren prompted Ballard to found the JASON project in 1989. This brings live broadcasts of science and underwater exploration into school classrooms | |
