| Mitochondrion. False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a mitochondrion in a cell. At centre,the mitochondrion (orange) is seen with its double membrane; the inner membrane has folded ingrowths called cristae in which chemical reactions occur. Mitochondria are sites of cell respiration: sugars and fats are oxidised to produce energy which is then stored. Mitochondria are thus called "powerhouses" of the cell. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) can be seen in the cell cytoplasm (turquoise) as long tubules covered with ribosomes (dots).
