False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the nuclear envelope seen edge-on showing two nuclear pores closed by a dark-staining diaphragm. The nucleus lies on the right of the cell & the cytoplasm on the left. The double- layered nuclear membrane is clearly visible as is the clustering of dark- staining chromatin on the inner surface of the nuclear envelope. The pores control the export of material from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Magnification: x15,800 at 35mm size. Pale green tint (50Y30G).
