Rats in a maze. Two white laboratory rats Rattus norvegicus moving through a maze. This behavioural experiment tests the rat's ability to orientate in,and memorize,a maze. These are albino rats bred from the original brown rat or Norway rat. Apart from laboratory mice, the white rat is the commonest mammal used in animal experimentation. Animals may be used to research behavioural theories or the safety of medical and cosmetic substances. The physiology of the white rat is in many respects similar to human physiology. However, suffering caused by animal tests has led to calls for legislative control | |
