Ribosome. Molecular graphic of a "hammerhead" ribosome (blue) bound to substrate messenger RNA (ribonucleic acid). Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis in cells. Most of the ribosome consists of RNA which performs a catalytic, rather than genetic, function. During protein synthesis a messenger RNA molecule (mRNA) attaches to a groove in the ribosome. It then slides along the groove and as it moves, amino acids are joined together in an order spelt out by a code of bases along the mRNA molecule. The darker blue and orange colours here represent bases in the RNA. Lighter colours molecule | |
