DNA. Coloured scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) image of a DNA molecule. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) forms the genetic material of all cells. It is a polymer consisting of a sugar phosphate back- bone, linked with another sugar phostphate back- bone by 4 nucleotide bases,adenine,guanine,thy- mine and cytosine. The red peaks represent the sugar phosphate atoms & the blue troughs are the bases. An STM provides a high resolution scanning electron microscope image of the surface of a mol- ecule. The image is formed by moving a fine-tipped needle close to the surface under study,& electronically recording the height of the point as it scans, producing a 3-D image | |
