Aerial view of Kayangel Atoll. This is the northernmost part of the Palau island group in the Pacific. The atoll is typical of coral atolls, showing a ring of coral reefs just below the surface of the water enclosing a deeper lagoon. Sand and other sediments drifting over the reef eventually form islands, and wind-borne plant seeds establish stabilising vegetation. Palau is a US Trust Territory at the western end of the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, and is situated about 800km east of Mindanao,Philippines | |
