Sand dunes. Sand dunes in the Sahara desert. Dunes are hills of loose sand which form in areas where the wind is strong and usually from one direction. The movement of the grains of sand due to the wind causes the dunes to migrate across the land at up to 30 metres a year. Sand dunes adopt a characteristic shape, with the side facing the prevailing wind being longer and less steep than the side opposite. Photographed in Morocco | |
