Stalactites and stalagmites in a cave. Stalactites (top) are formed when calcium carbonate precipitates from water droplets as they descend from the roof of the cave. Stalagmites (bottom) are formed from calcium carbonate deposited when the water droplets evaporate on reaching the cave floor. Some of the stalactites and stalagmites have grown far enough to meet and form limestone columns (centre). Photographed at Florida Caverns State Park,USA | |
