Stalagmites. Stalagmites are formed primarily in caverns in limestone type rocks. Water seeping through the rock dissolves the limestone. When it reaches a cavern,it drips from the ceiling and deposits the mineral. Stalagmites form from the cavern floor, whilst stalagtites form from the ceiling. When the two meet, they form a limestone column. Photographed in the Mitchell Caverns in California's East Mojave National Scenic Area | |
