Styracosaurus dinosaur. Artwork of Styracosaurus ("spiked reptile"),a horned dinosaur which lived during the Cretaceous period about 80 million years ago. Related to the famous Triceratops,Styracosaurus was a powerful,four-legged herbivore that grew to about 5.5 metres in length. It defended itself from predators with a horn on its nose and protected its neck with a bony frill that projected from its skull. The frill had window-like openings (seen here as depressions) which were filled with muscle or skin. The horns (epoccipital bones) around the rim of the shield may have been used for defence or for mating displays | |
