Triceratops dinosaur model. Triceratops was a very large and heavy herbivore that roamed across open grassland in the Cretaceous period (144-65 million years ago). Its three horns - two over the eyes and one over the animal's beak-like mouth - were probably used for defence. The large frill around the back of the head may have protected the neck from attacking predators. Some species of Triceratops grew up to 9 metres long and 5 tonnes in weight. In build and lifestyle they may have been similar to the modern rhinoceros | |
