Macrophotograph of a fossilized winged male termite trapped in amber,a fossilized resin, some 30 million years ago. Amber is extruded from wounded pines and other trees and as such it is an organic mineral. As it hardened it often enclosed small insects, which stuck to the sticky surface. The main deposit is found in the Oligocene of the South Baltic. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size | |
