Soufriere Hills volcano erupting. Thick clouds of ash and steam billowing from the top of the Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean Sea. Soufriere Hills is a steep-sided conical volcano, known as a composite volcano or a stratovolcano. It is over 900 metres high. The first recorded eruption of the volcano was in July 1995. Since that time,it has been nearly continually active, ejecting volcanic material and causing earthquakes. In autumn 1997,much of the island's population was evacuated after a major eruption was predicted. Photographed on 20 February 2000 | |
