Hurricane. Waves and high winds battering the shoreline during a hurricane storm. Hurricanes (also called typhoons or cyclones) are powerful, rotating storm systems which can grow up to about 1000 kilometres across, last for several weeks and travel thousands of kilometres. They can cause extensive damage due to high winds and coastal flooding. Hurricanes form in tropical regions and are caused by large-scale evaporation and convection over warm oceans, combined with atmospheric instability.
