Tornado. View of a tornado forming. A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air characterised by a funnel-shaped cloud. The air column may be up to 100 metres in diameter, and can cause widespread devastation. The damage caused to meteorological instruments by tornadoes make conditions difficult to record, but wind speeds of over 360 km per hour have been reported. The precise dynamics of torna- do formation are unknown, but include: a surface layer about 2000 metres deep,of warm moist air trapped below a temperature inversion; a tongue of dry air at very low pressure,& a trigger to init- iate the storm. Tornadoes are most common in the mid-West USA. Photographed in Sumner county,Kansas | |
