Tornado. Tornadoes are violent,counter-clockwise,very destructive and short-lived revolving storms. They are associated with an intensely low pressure system with wind velocities which may exceed 320km per hour. They are characterised by a dark funnel- shaped system (at centre) which protrudes downward from dark cumulonimbus clouds. Tornadoes may travel only a short distance (about 30km) and last only a few hours. They are particularly common in the Mississippi basin of the USA,in spring and early summer when warm humid air from the sea meets cool dry land conditions. This tornado occurred on the afternoon of 28 May 1982 in Atchinson County,Kansas,USA | |
