Sun halo. This is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when sunlight is refracted by ice crystals high up in the air. The light is most commonly refracted at an angle of 22 degrees, creating a ring that is 44 degrees in diameter (its angular size on the sky). The shape of the ice crystals also causes two spots of light to appear either side of the halo. These spots are called sun dogs. Moonlight can be affected in the same way | |
