US Civil War ship 'powder boy',1860s
US Civil War ship 'powder boy'. 1860s photograph of a boy seaman next to a naval gun,filling the role of 'powder boy' (also called 'powder monkey'). His job would be to carry gunpowder from the stores to the guns. This job was done by boy seamen (usually aged 12-14) as their small size allowed them to move swiftly around the ship. Photographed in around 1864 on the USS New Hampshire (part of the Union forces),off Charleston,South Carolina,USA,during the US Civil War. This ship was used as a store and depot ship during the war,and then as a training ship
