Harry Houdini (1874-1926),Hungarian-born US stunt performer,in chains during one of his escape stunts. Houdini was born Erik Weisz,later Weiss after he emigrated to the USA in 1878. He began a career in magic in 1891,moving into escapology and achieving great success and fame from 1899. This image is from the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation for whom Houdini performed in two films: 'The Master Mystery' (1918) and 'The Grim Game' (1919). As the film industry expanded Houdini attempted to adapt his daring escapes to the screen,founding Houdini Picture Corporation but then giving up on film acting in 1923
