Milky Way and SEST telescope. Arch of the Milky Way over the decommissioned Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST),with stars reflected in its dish. The European Southern Observatory's 3.6-metre telescope is at lower right. These telescopes are part of ESO's La Silla Observatory,located an elevation of 2400 metres in northern Chile. SEST,a radio telescope,has a diameter of 15 metres. It was built in 1987 and decommissioned in 2003. Observations it made included the Milky Way galactic centre and the Magellanic Clouds.
