Kidney glomerulus. Coloured scanning transmission micrograph (TEM) of a section through tissue from a healthy kidney, showing the glomerular structure. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood which passes through capillaries (white). Filtration occurs through the narrow slits between the interlocking pedicles, the cells covering the capillary bundle. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the resulting liquid is transported to the bladder as urine. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
