Nuclear waste as molten glass. Stimulant high-level nuclear waste being poured as glass heated to 1200 degrees Celsius. In vitrification, nuclear waste is combined with glass-forming additives and converted to glass for permanent storage. Visual inspections during pouring provide researchers with information on the presence of potential defects that may adversely affect the final glass properties. This experiment was carried out by materials scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL),Richland,Washington,USA. Photographed on 15 May 2013 | |
