The bright Scutum Star Cloud in the center of the frame dominates this section of the Milky Way. It is home to many of Barnard's dark nebula, and the jewel-like M11,a remarkable open cluster located just to the lower left of the center of the image. The Great Rift in the Milky Way,a gigantic dark molecular cloud which obscures the stars behind it,is seen here in Serpens Cauda in the upper right of the frame. Edward Emerson Barnard published his famous list of dark nebulae in a paper in 1919 in the Astrophysical Journal,On the Dark Markings of the Sky with a Catalogue of 182 such Objects | |
