Frederick Hopkins (1861-1947). Caricature of the English biochemist Sir Frederick Hopkins. In 1900,Hopkins discovered tryptophan,and that some amino acids,the essential amino acids,could not be manufactured by the body but had to be ingested. In 1906 he suggested that absence from the diet of trace substances contributed to protein deficiency,later forming his 'vitamin concept'. For this he was awarded the 1929 Nobel Prize in Medicine,shared with Christiaan Eijkmann. Hopkins was knighted in 1925 and was president of the Royal Society from 1930-1935
