Room where Livingstone was born. Illustration of the room in the house in Blantyre,Scotland,where British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) was born on 19 March 1813. Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa,travelled along the Zambesi River,and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior,wrote accounts of the native peoples,and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain,he died in Africa,where his heart was interred.
