Red alder,Alnus rubra,grows from southeast Alaska south to central coastal California,nearly always within about 200 km of the Pacific coast,except for an extension 600 km inland across northern Washington into northernmost Idaho. It is It is the largest species of alder in North America and one of the largest in the world,reaching heights of 20-35 m.
