This snowflake exhibits signs of thin film interference in the inner region. These colourful patterns occur where the crystal has formed bubbles in the ice, which results in extreme thin layers of ice. The thickness of the bubble (and therefore the surrounding ice) affects the colour that is created. This phenomenon is only observable using reflected light, and the background is a black woollen fabric. Specimen measures 2.3mm from top to bottom and the full image would print with a magnification factor of 38x if printed 10cm wide | |
