A molecular surface model of foot-and-mouth disease,a viral infection that affects hoofed animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and deer. Though humans are rarely infected, the disease is highly contagious among farm animals that are located in close proximity to each other and can contaminate farming equipment or feed. Symptoms include a high fever followed by blisters developing inside the mouth and on the feet that can rupture and cause lameness. The virus itself constantly evolves and mutates, making it difficult to develop a vaccine to protect against all strains. During an outbreak, livestock are often quarantined and slaughtered to prevent the virus from spreading | |
